I can't quite remember if I might have read this before....the weight of the cake stall rings a bell: perhaps I saw a film adaptation? (It doesn't really matter.) Anyway, I'm only a couple of pages in and I am LOVING the wry humour. Greene is (was) writing with a smirk on his face for sure.

Wow - I was just getting bored with this - a very slow central passage of about 40pp - but I soldiered through and now the story has exploded into life - what a great bit of writing (I say with hindsight!).

The plot very quickly sets up a peculiar but engrossing mystery: why is Arthur Rowe given information by the fortune teller at a wartime London fete that enables him to win a prize cake; and why does a strange deformed visitor come to his lodgings, apparently intent upon poisoning him and to retrieve the cake - before a German bomb puts paid to that? Arthur Rowe wants to know why, and so do I!
