Cecily — it is very painful for me to be forced to speak the truth. It is the first time in my life that I have ever been reduced to such a painful position, and I am really quite inexperienced in doing anything of the kind.
HAHAHAHA this play is actually funny

How have I never listened to this before? Comedic genius, gave laughed out loud lots already. Listening to the audible version with Stephen Fry, such perfect energy. Thoroughly enjoying!

really gagged over the absurd sincerity of these guys when they take these ridiculous moral positions. "the truth isn't something one tells to a nice, sweet, refined girl". sooooooo ..... .someone you know coded. deception as gentlemanly conduct. rationalizing your bad traits as virtues. brat

They're saying I'm one of the most earnest people ever, since I said that I would read The Importance of Being Earnest in January.

Wilde seems to like the name Earnest
it was an excellent play w/ tons of plot twists. (I just think that marrying ur own cousin is very weird)

Just finished reading it,will upload the full review later. This play was so hilarious. Another great piece of writing from Wilde. He is criticising the London's high society subtlyand the idea of marriage(requirements for a marriage). The characters and their way of delievering dialogues,it is so hilarious.

Never speak disrespectfully of Society, Algernon. Only people who can’t get into it do that.

Gwendolen. How absurd to talk of the equality of the sexes! Where questions of self-sacrifice are concerned, men are infinitely beyond us.
Jack. We are. [Clasps hands with Algernon.]

Gwendolen. [Superciliously.] No, thank you. Sugar is not fashionable any more. [Cecily looks angrily at her, takes up the tongs and puts four lumps of sugar into the cup.]
Cecily. [Severely.] Cake or bread and butter?
Gwendolen. Bread and butter, please. Cake is rarely seen at the best houses nowadays.
Cecily. [Cuts a very large slice of cake, and puts it on the tray.] Hand that to Miss Fairfax.

Cecily. What an impetuous boy he is! I like his hair so much. I must enter his proposal in my diary.
