Just the kind of book I needed right now. Simon Barnes is definitely rounding up to be one of my favourite nature writers.

..we need other species: to savour our affinity for them, and to savour the wildness they give us: and above all, to find some greater understanding of the fact that we can, if we choose, live our lives among creatures that are not human: rather, they are a billion times told lovelier, more dangerous.

I suspect that the most important skill is not knowing but noticing. The most important is not knowledge but curiosity.

My concentration really sucks.
