The opening to this book has a whole chapter on why programming is important. And it explains that software is involved in almost everything we do these days, and a huge amount of it is written is the language this guy came up with C++.

Book presents all its ideas really nicely and so far has some really good general programming tips.

Really excellent, I always enjoy reading Stroustrup, and was thrilled to find that he does have recent print publications out - for a long time I had the impression that he'd switched to maintaining online resources only. I expect I'll re-read this pretty soon.
