I'm uncomfortable seeing that some reviewers called Betsy an (ex)prostitute. She was a teenager forced into sex slavery. There is difference.

I like Betsy a lot. And so far this is great story.

By strange coincidence, I'm reading two novels featuring brothels at the moment. Very different novels, with very different brothels. TNonetheless, they have started to intermingle in my mind / memories of story incidents. How peculiar. Also, I must finish one or both of the novels soon: time to read about things that aren't brothels!

Betsy-Anne's back story helps bring things together.

I have now learned what Sophia's mysterious 'little weakness' is. It's not pleasant.

I'm struggling to get into this, but will carry on for now.

II bought this last autumn on a whim. I hope it's as good a read as it looks.

Chekov's gun is getting some attention.

This reads a little like Hilary Mantel's Cromwell books so far. Except more honestly tawdry.
