Status Updates From The Splendour Falls

Chapter 4 of 34... Wondering when this will get interesting. Too many characters being introduced and no plot advancement to this point.

I am interested in the history of this town she is in, in France, called Chinon. I am interested in how the history of King John's wife, Isabella comes into play with this book. I am a history major, but the history of England in this time period never did interest me much, and I never noticed any of the wives names until we get to Henry VIII.

So far am enjoying this book. The main character, Emily, seem to be a bit lost and I don't know if it's because of her parents divorce or what. There seems to be a weird vibe between her and her cousin Harry though. I don't think that the author meant there to be a vibe there, but they act a little too much like lovers and not cousins.

Ah, dammit. Why did that have to happen?

I'm really missing the history that Kearsley usually delivers. There's hardly any backstory here.

I'm only on chapter four and there are four new male characters for a woman who doesn't believe in happy endings. Well then.

Totally enjoying this story so far!

So far I'm loving it. A lot of characters to keep track of

I'm not sure I can finish this. I can't seem to get into it to any degree. I'm leaving it for a bit. And I love the other Kearsley books.

How original...another book with "the ugly American tourist" character.

It starts a little slow. I'm in about a hundred pages and it's finally starting to pick up the pace.

I am going to compare this book to Twilight... Because I cannot understand why all these different men seem to be fighting over this boring, unremarkable girl. :/

I know this was one of Kearsley's first novels, but it is definitely lacking compared to her others. She wrote Mariana before this and I absolutely loved it... The synopsis promises two linear subplots of historical fiction and yet anything historical has been few and far between. Not to mention the main character is rather dull...

Men like Neil, I thought, might talk of love and mean it, while flirtatious men demanded nothing, promised less, and never disappointed. There could be no danger, I decided, in a dinner with Armand Valcourt.

Having picked up where I left off earlier, it seems like the book is getting better. The story seems to be picking up, so hopefully it'll end on a good note.

This books is getting a "meh" so far from me. Our heroine is so weirdly judgmental of the (few) other women she encounters, she's dangerously close to my judging her insufferable.

I know this is a reissue so I expected to not be in love with this title as much as the more recent of the author's works. While you can see how her writing has matured, I'm still intrigued and completely involved in the story.

I didn't see that coming.

So, she likes Neil? I'm a little lost again.

Narrator is not my favorite-the main character is 28 and she sounds much older.

If you like Mary Stewart's novels (which I inhaled as a teen), you will love Susanna Kearsley. The arc of this story is spot on for a Stewart fan...

My copy of this book smells really nice.

Still great, but I'm waiting for the mystery part of the story to commence...
