I don't know if I can explain it, but this is one of the best books I've read for years.
1. The characters are great - down to earth, full of faults and frailties. It doesn't hurt that DD is gorgeous - tho I can only see him in my mind.
2. The setting/situation - who hasn't wondered what the afterlife is like? Who knows - but it's within the realm of what I imagine it might be.
3. the language is poetic and smart.
