Friends, I’m just really digging this book. Wolfe essentially writes an ensemble cast (unlike Book of the New Sun or the Fifth Head of Cerberus). It still maintains Wolfe’s style of dropping breadcrumbs to something more expansive and awe striking than can be grasped on a first read. But it’s less convoluted in that regard than his other works. It’s much more straight space opera.

"Instead I talk of cursing, a different thing. Should I say in this Common Tongue, may your pubic hair grow longer than your lies and become entangled in the working of a mill, it is but laughable. In my own tongue, it soars to the sun and leaves each hearer awed. Yet the cursing of Auk was new to me, grand and hideous as the birth of devils."

the drama machine is churning.

"Have you got the safety on that thing, lady?"
"Call me Maytera. I insist on it."
"All right, all right!" His voice shaking, Urus repeated, "Have you got the safety on?" and added, "Maytera?"
"No, my son, I do not."

back to work so i can update goodreads again :) this chapter took me a while to get thru but even when the book is slow i'm still having a great time and just cozying on up to the catholic sci fi that i so crave

this chapter had a particularly fantastic vibe. Villas and dust storms and hot days and green flags flapping against monolithic space ships.
