what a quaint little book. there's tragedy, but it isn't all-consuming. my only complaint is that the lack of punctuation makes it difficult to tell who is speaking. i usually like when authors break that rule (remember my Selby, Jr. kick), but i think this is an example of doing it poorly; the characters do not have distinct enough dialogue to make distinguishing them an easy task. still a good read so far.

this book has such an interesting and soft sadness to it. i must admit that i was interested at the beginning, but got more bored as i continued. however, now that i have read the end of the first part and am in the midst of reading the second, i enjoy the deeper exploration of those emotional aspects. if the momentum continues, i see myself considering this book a favorite. maybe i'll give other Carey books a try.

i didn't know if i liked this book enough to continue reading, but i think i've hit the point in the book where the reader is settled in. i do like some aspects of the story, but the chapter divisions and such were odd to me; after doing brief research and learning that Carey is primarily a playwright, this makes more sense and I can understand that decision enough to be okay with it. we'll see how it holds up.

i've wanted to read this book for a long while, so i'm excited to finally have went to the library and waited for a librarian to retrieve it for me . . . what a rush! it's just okay so far, but it does have its own charm.
