I just read "Separated," and I can't breathe thinking about these children arriving in America (but not in 1944, but in 2018) and being kept in cages. Those families reported that the worst part of the journey was when they got here and were separated from their children and made to sign away their rights....

Mind you, that isn't what happened in this book. But "do I have to write Sarah" broke me. Sarah and Israel

At the boarding of the train. Parents in the platform were not allowed to wave, nor were the kids. Jews were not allowed to do the Nazi salute, so waving was too risky - punishable by death.

I freaking love Eleanor and her preception of the smug, arrogant people in Vienna. I was heartbroken when she described asking all 50 kids if they would leave their mom and dad and when she described the look on the men's faces.

I'm so frustrated by the anti-immigration sentiment everywhere - even and especially in the United States - made it so difficult for Jews to escape persecution. They could get out, but there was no where to go
