Fun getting back into this one even if it is entirely Greek/Roman (western) focused.

I’m enjoying how this is a general history with emphasis on women - if you are new (or new to it again, like me, having forgotten much over the years) this will feel less overwhelming and niche— learn about ancient history (starting with the Minoans- emphasis acknowledged by the author to be on Greece and Rome)

Hellooooo? Bread as innately female? The womb is an oven in which a woman ~bakes~ her baby?? Bun in the oven is a thing as far back as 550 BC????

The main title is accurate and the book successfully traces the missing thread of women in ancient history. However the subtitle is misleading.
The main story, well told, is ancient history as done by men with women only occasionally making an appearance or impact on events.
There is little to no history of the majority of women or their daily lives. Must like ancient history many battles and assassinations.

Some figures from history owe their survival to serendipity but many more owe it to design. The disappearance of so many women was not simple chance. The men who penned the vast majority of the surviving sources simply wrote them out of the narrative as unimportant.

Couldn’t find this using the ISBN: 9781474615617. This is the hardback copy by Weidenfeld & Nicolson first published in (May?) 2024.

Borrowed by the library. I am the first reader of this copy.
