The sun was beaming, the day growing warm. Only a few bits of gray fluff marred an otherwise flawless blue sky.
So why the cold prickle spreading across my skin?

The Foggy Bottom fires. The tiny subcellar lady. The four upstairs DOAs. Officer Deery. The Stoll brothers. The upcoming interview.
The broken icemaker that had rendered my home uninhabitable.

The right to search for truth implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true. That was the answer. The reason for my commitment to the subcellar lady.

Suddenly I was wide awake.
For one unnerving moment, I had no idea where I was.
Then recognition.
Sonofabitch!
I went bolt upright.

| was trying to pull a corpse from a bag. It wouldn't budge. The harder I tugged, the deeper the lifeless limbs entangled themselves in the burlap. Great. The subcellar vic was now haunting my sleep.

Would they care about the lady in the sack?
Was her death even a murder?
Why not let it go?

I listened. Felt the expression on Doyle's face take over mine.
Doyle's informant was calling with a tip about another fire.
In Foggy Bottom.

The process was painstakingly slow, but eventually Burlap's booty lay fully exposed. Mixed feelings. Relief that I hadn't been wrong. Sadness that I hadn't been wrong.

What about my belowdecks corpse? The home had been built in 1911. When had the woman died? How? Why the burlap sack? How had her body ended up in the subcellar? The subcellar that was mysteriously absent from the architectural plans.

Drawing close, I circled the sack, braced a hand on the wall, and squatted. Using one finger, I loosened the knot and dragged the edge of the burlap downward a few inches. I aimed my erratic beam down into the opening I'd created. My heart threw in a few extra beats.

Since a large portion of the parlor floor had fallen into the basement, I proceeded to that level. The air was danker, the light gloomier, but little else differed. Except that I scored body number four.
