even when we find power inside us&lift it to the light, we still carry the wounded animal of our memory, the bruises&scars, the spurning...We want the ones who held mirrors, in solace or mockery, to see us w/fresh admiring eyes, as if this could affirm us, mend the shattered parts, make us whole. Those who've been broken have more shards inside us than we know&who among us had not been broken, as women in this world?

I did not have to stay composed for the sake of others. Or to seem sane. What did it mean, anyway, to be sane? To shut up and be small? I didn't want it and I didn't have to do it.
