Part I is a bit strange as the author argues that the Neoconservatives err on the side of socialism -- that is, they eschew the "liberal-classical" tradition of the author's own Libertarian bent, in favor of New Dealism (and the welfare state). The situation will become considerably more complex, however, later in the book, when this Neoconservative "socialism" is joined to their campaign for "National Greatness".

This book is quite good -- no, it is VERY good. My only caveat is that sometimes I cringe at hearing how the author (C.Br.T.) was himself once a follower of this movement (he broke from it). Of course, both Strauss and Kristol are enormously tedious thinkers, and plumbing their minds for 350 pages is a bit like enduring a colonoscopy. Their thought reeks of feces.... literally.
