Fascinating views on Conrad, Woolf, Mann, Breton, Malraux, Henry Miller, Dinesen, Camus, Hemingway, Nabokov, Grass, Arguedas, and the importance of reading to maintain a civilized society. I have just begun his article on George Grosz and, I have to say, I will have to withhold my appreciation. Beautiful writing but not one of my favourite artists.

Excellent editor's introduction and a lovely first autobiographical first article describing Llosa's childhood and his beginnings with reading and literature.
