In this last large section, chapters 24 and 25 I think, Grant gives examples of the differences between cowardliness and respectable retreat in fear. He approaches one with disdain and seems to relate to the other or at least acknowledges the humanity of it.

Again, I'm so pleased with the writing in this book. It's engaging and interesting, though a bit understated at times. General Grant recounted a close call after the Battle of Belmont where he briefly rested on a sofa in the captain's room of a ship. He stood up to return to the deck just as a musket ball tore through the head of the sofa where moments prior he was relaxing.
