It's just become a slog. There's nothing here for me to grab on to. I'm going to finish this thing, but . . . I wish I cared.

On the one hand, the descriptions of upper Michigan a century ago are lovely and haunting. On the other, I sometimes find it hard to figure out what Hemingway was trying to say. Was he the first post-modernist?

Very intriguing! My favorite story so far is “The Last Good Country.”

I did not see that much fishing coming

I forgot how much I love Hemingway. The cleanest writing.

On his way to become Hemingway.

Gave up on Ernie this time. Just lost interest. Fascinated to see what the fuss was all about, and loved the northern Michigan references a century ago, but beyond that, I could not get myself to pick it up again and finish.

Decided to give up on Ernie's ghost. Fascinating at first for the familiar northern Michigan (century old) references, and then POOF I found myself reaching for other books. Nothing personal!

On Writing might have changed my life.

The Three-Day Blow really hit me hard.

Taking a short break from the short stories, I think.

Not amazing stories though they are like if Hemingway is trying to create one tiny scene. Almost like how an artist will only show one tiny scene of a character in a painting or sketch.

Started reading this around 2am, a knot in my gut, wearing a bathrobe, drinking whiskey, too afraid to look at election results.

Compare this with the umpteen dull and cliched covers that come up on Amazon for it, including this washed out one that Goodreads uses. When was the golden age of book design?

I bought this for $5 at Herridge Books in Wellfleet, a dangerously well-curated used bookstore on Cape Cod. The edition I've got is the Scribner Library one with an arresting black and green image of trees and a log tipped over all drawn with thick lines and a serious sense of foreboding. Perfectly evocative of the work itself.

I will never finish this book -- and I give great credit to my high school junior son who did.
