It is quite a story and a hugh book but it is hard going (1914-1918 in France so you can imagine) so I'm taking a little break before finishing the last 200 plus pages.

I have had this book for about three years and having discovered recently that Books 2 and 3 are now available, it is time to begin this saga. The first one hundred plus pages of this book, initially establishes the de Witt family, though it is clear from the outset, there is so much more to this family than first meets the eye. Set from 1914 to 1918 and the life of the youngest of the family, Celia, is a main focus.

So, I've picked this book up again after nearly a month of not having read any of it (we moved house). Hoping to get right back into it.

If you like to read historical fiction you may be interested in reading this book that tells the story of a German English family living in England and telling about events leading up to World War I. This is a book that is reminiscent of Downton Abbey.

First in a trilogy. On the eve of WWI in an English country home, we find our young heroine Cecilia. She is innocent and naive at the start of the book, the beginning of the war, but she grows older and wiser as time goes by. She loses her innocence as the war rages on. I will read the next two books but I am not waiting breathlessly. It was a decent read.

I can't believe Celia is so bored she wants to learn how to chop carrots and they won't let her. Being "privileged" is overrated!

1914 was a rough year for the De Witt's. Somehow I think 1915 will be worse.

Who knew A Midsummer Night's Dream could be so problematic?

Kate Williams' prose is as effortless as staring at a landscape painting and her nonfiction prowess properly evokes the feeling of 1914 England.

This was a great read. Very Downton-esq! A reviewer mentions it being the new Cazalet Chronicles. I preferred it to Cazalet because there weren't so many family members to deal with. A very moving read about life in WWI. Looking forward to reading the next one.
