well it’s buddhism’s same problems. you try to talk about the glory of dissolving into the emptiness and meanwhile everything talks about compassion and goodness without any explanation/justification for how a value system exists without a god. or rationale why the nothingness would define anything at all. it’s feel good to be sure but the emperor has no clothes

Already read this once, but encouraged my 18 year old to read it with me. He needs some guidance during his formative years and who better to give it than me and The Dude?!

Really just a conversation. Kind of repetitious at times. Jeff's takes about his acting career were a plus.

"Bernie: So if you think, 'Oh, I got knocked over and that's a sign that I'm not practicing well enough', all that happened was that you met a situation that was a little bigger than you, and that gave you a new opportunity for more practice."

"Bernie: ... Abiding nowhere, raise the mind of compassion. The Dude abides nowhere, which is the same as saying that the Dude abides everywhere. The Dude is not attached to some self-image, identity, or a life narrative. Since he abides nowhere, he is free to abide everywhere. Jeff: As he says in his phone message, The Dude is not in.

"Jeff: ... We should all treat everyone we encounter as a righteous soul on account of whom the world abides. That's very Dude."

I'm really getting a lot to think about with this book, and seems to have come at the perfect time for thoughts and concepts I was already formulating.

To describe this book, Jeff Bridges/The Dude says:
"To me, this book is sort of like a snakeskin. A snakeskin is something you might find on the side of the road and make something out of--a belt, say, or a hatband. The snake itself heads off doing more snake stuff--getting it on with lady snakes, eating rats, making more snakeskins, et cetera."

Around page 100 this book went from the sacred to the profane.
Changing from awesome cosmic concepts to specific examples we should emulate like Richard Pryor and Wavy Gravy! Then I was educated on how Obama has brought us all together with his childhood hunger programs.
I'm skeptical that the path to enlightenment is a mind-numbing, giant bureaucracy to control parents and their children.
