i think this is an impossible story to tell. no amount of research or interviews will ever get us closer to billie and publishing a book that is exhaustively obsessed with the tragedy of being a black woman in america is something i’d argue is nefarious. her life has been so thoroughly infringed upon for books and films over the years that i’m starting to think the shroud of mystery allowed her to rest in peace

The book is a mini encyclopedia of jazz and Lady Day’s history. It will take time for me to consume it, but it will be worth it.
