First story was amazing, the secomd was okay and the third is just nuts. Honestly it is f*ing crazy.

I didn't end up having to finish this book for class.

One of the best books I’ve ever read. Given it another visit.

Tobias Wolff writes beautifully giving much attention to even the smallest detail, whether it be descriptive of landscape, vehicles, atmosphere, characters' appearances, thoughts, speech, mannerisms, movements, or actions. He skillfully incorporates these details in his stories in such a way that they do not detract, but become unified bringing the narrative to life.

Anthony Heald reads Our Story Begins New and Selected Stories by Tobias Wolff with great expertise. These philosophical short stories cause one to think!

Không ai nên bị cô đơn trong thế giới này. Ai cũng cần có một người khác để giữ được niềm tin, dù có chuyện gì xảy ra, dù thế nào đi nữa.

Không làm thế được, anh nghĩ. Nhưng anh biết điều này không đúng. Anh có thể bỏ họ. Người ta vẫn bỏ rơi nhau và vẫn bị bỏ rơi suốt đó thôi. Chuyện đó thật kinh khủng; nhưng mà nó vẫn cứ xảy ra và người ta vẫn tồn tại như người ta đã tồn tại qua những thứ còn kinh khủng hơn.

Ai cũng bảo loài người thật tuyệt vời vì biết cách thích nghi với hoàn cảnh; nhưng tôi không chắc lắm. Ở Istanbul, một người bạn của tôi nhìn thấy một người đàn ông đi trên phố với một cái đàn piano khổng lồ ở trên lưng. Mọi người trên phố chỉ tránh ra cho ông ta đi chứ không ai giúp. Thật kinh khủng - những gì mà con người có thể trở nên thích nghi.

I just cried because of one of these stories. I have never read a collection of stories before but by this ones standards I'm going to have to go out and get some more!

I've only read two stories so far, but this is great!

I am so glad this was an assigned book for my Contemporary American Literature class. His authentic short stories make me envious because of how much control he has over structure and character development.

In this batch listened to a story called, "A Mature Student," which was pretty profound. The rest of the stories are getting old with the same premise and ending, i.e. Wolff isn't really ending most of the stories. I hope the last 1/4th of the book is better. 1 good atory out of the whole collection isn't good.

I'm loathe to finish this book...

I've been called Tw Jr by a member of the Thursday Night Band so I was curious. loved it

a member of my writing group calls me Tobias Wolff jr so this was my first exposure to him and I lived it

I think brilliance has a new name: Tobias Wolff!

I think Tobias Wolff is a good writer, but I don't think he's at his best with short stories. Man, he loves Ernest Hemingway, though.
