of 454...just chose this book because I couldn't find the right edition. This second book has definitely improved in terms of interest, but some chapters are better than others.

I love philosophy so this section is a bit better. Not much story but interesting food for thought.

This book 2 is much better than the first volume, thank goodness!

Not loving this book so far, it mostly philosophizing with only a very thin veil of a story....the story part is not so engaging.

and never had it been so clear to him as in the instant when he followed her to what an extent the impassioned entry into another body is a continuation of the child's liking for secret, even vicious hiding-places.

and through the darkness the aerial storm of love came raging like a gale. It was with a thud that it set the lovers back on firm ground again, when, vanishing through the walls, it let them go. And now the darkness lay between them like a lump of coal with which the sinners had blackened themselves.

One does of course press the wine from the grapes. But how much more beautiful than a pool of wine could ever be is the vineyard on the hillside, with its indigestible crude earth and its endless rows of shining stakes made of dead wood!

Things that lay far back in the past and things quite fresh and new were no longer kept artificially apart; but when it was all there at once, then what they called 'at different times' was no longer entwined with it like a scarlet thread that one has to tie round a twin baby's neck because one can't tell one from the other.

Perhaps they do it wrong, do it brainlessly, one running in one direction and one in another, each with one notion in his beak, which he considers the only one in the world, each of them thinking himself frightfully clever, and all of them together believing that the age is condemned to sterility. But perhaps it's the other way round, and each one of them is stupid but all of them together are fertile?

in short, even on days when one did nothing in particular, there were so many things one must avoid doing that one had the feeling of being very active indeed.

Hardly anyone still _reads_ nowadays. People make use of the writer only in order to work off their own excess energy on him in a perverse manner, in the form of agreement or disagreement.

that all roads to the mind start from the soul but that none of them leads back again!
