Whether this book has hit its stride or I have hit my stride reading it I do not know, but I now feel the foreward momentum that was previously lacking. Some pages are so rich with insight that I struggle not to underline everything.

Reading this book is like trying to swim through honey. Sweet if you taste a little. Overwhelming in large gulps. Hard to make forward progress.
Trying to keep up with the genius that Forrest lays on the page is taxing. I may not be cut out for it.

Ole superbird dipped in buttermilk, shoofly, he scoffed, thinking of Sir Larry hanging out in the wings in preparation for the Moor, and conquering Junior’s dancing footfall swaggering cadence.

But memory, which freezes time, also creates a rupture and destroys as it heals.

...the world he had worshipped, celebrated, helped redefine, build and conquer would not free him, not allow him to be free.

Back on this after a bit of a break. Loving the characterization of Amos-Otis Thigpen. Damn can Forrest write!

Well, I had to reread basically the whole Rachel Carpenter Flowers chapters to get a good handle with all that sermonizing. Went back and reread the character list (now that I have more context), and now that Nathaniel has fled his impromptu re-baptism things are really picking up! Shaping up to be an amazing read!

After all of you talking about how the other two in The Trilogy were not as transcendent as "There Is A Tree..." I was somehow expecting this to be breezier. I was wrong. This is one VERY dense book so far...

It’s not that I didn’t know it was coming, progressing, giving me time to prepare. I must tell you GR Friends that I have reached the end of Leon Forrest’s The Bloodworth Orphans. A bitter sweet tragedy.

What a world to live in. No one writes like him leaving the charred remains. The seared skin. The ravings in the woods.
