Kuniko is (was) indeed a dumb bitch. Wasn't surprised that she ended up the way she did. This was all very dark and why I don't read thrillers often (not a fan of true crime and this counts ig).. 4 stars bc it was gripping, but also that the title nicely fits its explorations into feminism & capitalism, among other systems us individuals can't seem to distentagle ourselves from.

It's taken me a month to even write this bc I clearly had to process what I just listened to. Was not expecting a violent rape to be at the end of this book but I'm so glad that Masako lived. I woulda kept listening to her story too if it kept going. Kinda wanted her to run off w the Brazilian dude, but apparently her connection w what's his name (rip?) transcended all others.

As she crawled along through the morning rush-hour traffic, she let her thoughts range over the past few months and on into the future. Was she the hunter or the hunted? Would she kill or be killed?

‘They want revenge,’ said Masako, and as soon as the word had left her mouth the puzzle seemed to solve itself. Of course, that was it. He wanted revenge, an elaborate, expensive revenge. She’d been wrong in thinking it was about the insurance money. If it was money he wanted, would he have spent millions of yen to get Kuniko’s body here to scare them? But that made the whole thing even more terrifying.

The warm, still air that preceded a typhoon was oppressive. The storm, a fairly large one, was bearing down on them now, signalling an end to summer. Masako looked up at the sky, listening to the wind wailing in the upper atmosphere. As she reached her red Corolla, she saw a familiar bicycle coming toward her across the supermarket parking lot.

To be sure, there was a deep sense of guilt, but Satake had also discovered in himself a tendency to enjoy inflicting pain, as well as a powerful charge from the proximity to death itself.

Are you serious??? What kind of a terrible ending is this?!?!

'We should never have done this.'
'Shut up!' Masako yelled, lurching through the door and grabbing Yoshie by the collar. 'Don't you understand? They're after us!'
Yoshie looked at her blankly, as though she were speaking a foreign language.
'What do you mean?'
'Isn't it obvious? They sent us Kuniko!'
'I'm sure it's just a coincidence,' she whispered.
'How can you say that?!'
Everyone except Masako is an idiot

'Time to get up,' he said.
'No,' she murmured, clinging to him.
'Don't you have class?' She was probably still in her first year of high school - a girl, really, not a woman at all - but he was only interested in the young ones, so to him she was a woman.

She thought over what Yoshie had said about the dead being no different from the living, and she nodded to herself as she stood under the shower. A dead body was revolting, but it couldn't move. Miyamori, on the other hand, could still make a grab for her, and that, she thought, made him worse.

Starting to get crazy and intense.

I literally have no words. I’ve barely made a dent yet so much has already happened. That’s my fault for not reading the blurb. I will say there are intense moments and I’m waiting to see why it’s pertinent to the plot. We shall see.

‘I want to go home.’ The moment the smell hit her, the words came into her head. She didn’t know exactly what home it was she wanted to go to, certainly not the one she’d just left. But why didn’t she want to go back there? And where did she want to go? She felt lost.

So I read this book in high school for summer reading and I remember enjoying this. So I’m excited to reread this again! I do remember the characters being crazy, comical, yet relatable. So we’ll see.

I am loving this so far, it's been a long time since a book has made me not want to put it down

Considering the blurb of the book, I'm not surprised how early on the 'action' takes place (about a fifth into the book).
Leaves lots to the imagination :00
