DNF. I struggled with the fact that this is a rare representation of a Black woman’s life and work. It was a series of vignettes and I wasn’t enjoying the style. Someone here said you have to read it in sips. They were right.

As much as I bemoan the dearth of published books by Black women, especially “back in the day,” I know I’m not going to finish this one by the time my book club meets to discuss it.
As one reader offered, I can only take it in sips. I’m just not finding it that interesting.
I had to admit I’d rather read a Black author’s science fiction than read one more tale about having to live with white oppression.

Interesting—the introduction, written by someone else, is the first 14% of this very small book. It’s quite a treatise on food, sexism, racism and cooking.
