I enjoyed reading this series with my older son years ago and was excited to start it with my daughter this week.

I remember reading this for Yr7 English class... Revisiting to see if to keep on my shelf or if it's time to pass it on

Another recommended read from my teacher friend. She used to do a complete unit on this book before the new, mandated curriculum.

This is what we call foreshadowing, Nooria. If you say nothing will go wrong, it will go wrong.

I wonder how many other girls disguised themselves as boys throughout Taliban rule. Are they kept more in check since this book came out in 2001 and the Taliban is in control of Afghanistan again?

It’s crazy listening to this in 2024 when the Taliban is in control of Afghanistan again.

I forgot that Nooria was kind of an asshole. Maybe it’s just an older sister thing

How come her family didn’t decide to have Parvana disguise herself sooner?

Still really good! I wonder if there's more of a religious undertone of the bones/overall story being told. My two favorite lines I read were "The more she was ignored, the more confident she felt" (70) and "Could they [the Taliban] have feelings of sorrow, like all other human beings?" (80). The perspective of a child empathizing with them as a means to understand the taliban was such a painful but profound detail.
