At some point you lose sight of your actual parents; you just see a basketful of history and unresolved issues.

The obsession with sex this book has is getting pretty tiring. It’s like reading some perverted teenager’s attempt at “literature.” If we can go one chapter without talking about sex or a woman being reduced to her sexual value, I’ll be amazed.

There's an excerpt from Trooper's other book "One Last Thing Before I Go" and its kind of what I feared. He seems like an adult John Green. Same sort of characters and thoughts, just with a new name and a new-ish situation. He likes to write lonely men. It's alright, but I just read it. I feel like the dark humor and realistic-ishness of his writing is how I write. A gem here or there. Idt I'll read more from him.

When I read about marriage and relationships there's cheating. And most times I'm left feeling like cheating is just a part of marriage to be accepted, it's an expectation and the future of the marriage depends on how much of a fixable sin that is to you. It's a problem without a solution, therefore, just an inconvenience. I definitely expected more of a comedy than this bitterness. I think I'd like the movie more.

FINISHED. It's interesting that the dad was a better dad when the children were young, when they were barely people and just things to be looked after and played with, how when they grew up and into opinions and flaws he withdrew. I think this book tried to be realistic, but ended up theatrical. With abrupt arguing and childish fighting even for a family like this. In the end things got nicely wrapped up.

In the beginning you feel bad for Judd. He's cheated on and leaves his home and job and then we find out Jen's pregnant and it's all so sadly, frustratingly unfair. But Judd acts like a child, he throws tantrums and won't communicate. He becomes unlikeable even though some of it is understandable.

If I could describe this book in one word, if would be bitter. It's like if Diary of An Oxygen Thief wasn't a sociopath, that's the narration of this. Judd can make life sound really hopeless and he makes marriage sound like a dead end. Maybe I equate a healthy relationship to perfect, but that's not realistic. I wonder if all of Trooper's books take on this kind of tone. I do appreciate that it only has one PoV too

I do like this book. I think it's funny and sometimes put of line, but I like the sense of humor. I guess we're all ignoring the fact that Alice raped Judd, it sounds dramatic, but that's exactly what it was. I'd be interested to read more from this author. I have a few problems with the lack of depth in this book and the cliches and platitudes, but that seems to be just how he writes. Dysfunctional family nostalgia

Still liking this. There are quite a few cliches and Phillips strange habit of singing songs and quoting televisions t inappropriate moments. I like that the siblings bounce comments off one another and I got a dizzying fish of nostalgia when they were talking about childhood memories and the Brady Bunch. This does seem like this would make a better movie than book, but it's easy to relax into.

“And I’d read enough PlayBoy to know beautiful girls likes boys who could make them laugh” (maybe not direct as in book) I can’t stop giggling. That was a good one.

I knew this book would be that dark type of funny. I saw the preview for the movie and stumbled across the book a while later. I like it, there's this stream of conscious writing that is funny and easy to follow. This family's dysfunction reminds me of my own. I hope it doesn't lose its writing style like most books with this do, by the end it never stops. There are random SAT words that do fit, but idk them completel

At a pre-pandemic March 2020 lunch, my friend gave me this novel. As 2020 drew to a close, she died. The day after her death—and the first day of the new year—seems an appropriate time to finally begin reading it.

I’ll never understand why when people who cheat are told how much they’re despised that they’re upset my the news? Stop playing the victim. You’re the one that’s in the wrong.

This book is... boring. I’m skimming a lot of it but I wanna know what happens with their problems, how does it get resolved? What I don’t wanna know, is what all of Judd’s old friends have been doing for the last 10 years. I couldn’t fucking care less hun x
