I don’t, in fact, really like any of these characters.

Funny as hell- idk how it has lower than 4 stars. I decided to read it after watching the movie and I'm in love with the writing style.

“You never know when it will be the last time you’ll see your father, kiss your wife, or play with your little brother, but there’s always a last time. If you could remember every last time, you’d never stop grieving.”

idk might dnf, the book is more about judds sex life than any of the family members, and there is no instance of a female character that judd doesn’t make a comment about their sexuality or lack thereof, even his mom!!!

i genuinely don’t think i can finish this ive had it on my shelf since highschool and i can see why ive never reached for it. the main character is just so incredibly unlikable and the way he’s talking about women in the short 60 pages is pissing me off idk if that’s the point of whatever but i just don’t think it’s for me

I didn’t realize this was made into a movie over 10yrs ago with Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, James Fonda, Adam Driver, and a few others. It’s quirky and I’m thoroughly enjoying this comedy/drama.

Compared to other books about grief like Intermezzo I feel because there are so many characters that the theme of grief is being brushed upon rather than a forensic examination of how it manifests. This book is funny but so far its mostly about this old guy who is divorced and very horny and recounting every woman that used to make him horny as they show up at the Shiva for his father. Suspense is not really there.

Ugh, the way this author writes about women is so annoying. Every woman that appears for even a second needs to have her body evaluated. He assumes women are always cattily evaluating other women too. But the last straw for me was this scene just now where he called two TEENAGERS’ bodies “RIPE.” Friggin GROSS, dude. I’ve been tolerating the book so far bc it’s audio but I don’t know if I can keep going.

3.8 stars but I’m rounding up cuz this is worth the read. This book is laugh out loud funny and a super fun and immersive read. Some tender moments amidst a backdrop of family chaos as 4 siblings come together to sit shiva after the death of their father.

This book is not good. The jokes are cheap and the protagonist is sexist and obsessed with women, so most of his internal monologue is about that, which got old immediately. At this point I’m only reading it with the hope that the protagonist has some growth (or really just that anything at all happens), but I’m doubtful.

I found this book, which I bought several years ago at a library sale and instantly forgot about, buried under discarded ephemera in a kitchen cabinet a few weeks ago. You know what? It’s very funny!
