This section feels like a reset. Don’t reduce reality to science alone, but don’t reduce it to mysticism either. Include everything. Move slowly. Accept vagueness and error. Seek understanding, even knowing it will never be complete.

Bennett argues that logic and numbers alone can’t fully explain reality or human meaning. Historically, humans experienced numbers as real forces that seemed to shape events, and this belief naturally blended into magic. Even modern society secretly relies on “magical” thinking through faith in systems and technology. True understanding lies between blind belief and blind rejection of magic.

#’s are not just about counting things. While counting and ordering help us measure and organize the world, they don’t tell us everything about how things are structured. Some #’s behave very differently inside a system, like how 12 can be divided many ways while 11 cannot, and those differences matter. Reality itself works this way: it has hidden structure and meaning that simple logic and counting often miss.

Our thoughts are very restricted to where we cannot understand the universe completely (not even close). We simplify complex idea into yes/no’s, like/dislike, approach/avoid. Our senses are great, but limit our ability to process the entire universe as we only process time in past, present and future. Our view of time is a narrow illusion of what could be, based on our biology

Just finished the introduction. Moving onto part 1 of 4, starting with Metaphysics. Strong points made by Bennett

Oh golly gee. Still on the introduction. Learning a lot. I agree with Bennett that the world we live in and want to live in is very predictable. We like routine, we like knowing outcomes before they happen, we like to control/force/resist different situations. Instead we need to try just adapting and responding to different situations. We should live with more unpredictability in life.
