Very reminiscent of “desert solitaire” less philosophical which is nice

Great coming of age story but It’s hard to get past the fact that he’s wasting an entire poached moose and poaching other animals along the way. It’s not like it’s 1910 and he’s a frontiersman, licenses exist for a reason.

"The anow was the ally now, burying every sign of whatever I might do. I could understand and forgive my own foolish decisions. It was the fear of having other people scrutinize my actions that I could not bear - people who only visited this place and could not understand what it was like to stay here."

If you love the wilderness, this book is set in an area my family homesteaded. What a story!

Relatable account of being in the mountains alone. He has a very nice narrative style so it moves along quickly.

He’s made it up to January, and so far, he had a challenging Christmas but fortunately was able to kill a moose. His father and brother weren’t able to visit him due to getting stuck in the cold, and he was able to accompany some hunters out hunting a mountain lion, getting to witness his first hunt.

I stood quietly, my ax dangling from my hand, listening for how long it took the twists of the canyon to silence even the roar of their engines and the banging of their trailers through the rutted road.

The moose hunt was brutal, the cougar hunt in chapter 13 was disgusting. They use "hounds" to tree the cat ("lion") and then shoot it from a dozen or two feet away. Sport. Yeah, right.
