Status Updates From Permutation City

This book has seriously grown on me. There's so much to it. I keep having to pause and just think about the implications of little anecdotes.

Greg Egan's "A Series of 'Um'-inducing Events"

Somehow failed to add this to my currently-reading list. So far it's highly intriguing if you're into the entire "brain upload" transhumanism GitS thing.

This has been in my to-read list for while after being recommended by a few podcast listeners. Turns out I've read it before! I don't remember the story, but indivual scenes and many mind blowing ideas have stuck with me from my first reading, even though I forgot which book they were from.

Wow, this is fucking mind blowing. It's like Descartes got into some very strong peyote.

200 pages in and I am confused. I have almost no clue where this book is going.

Part two

So far, so good. When Egan gets his teeth into something, it can end up brilliant.

This is some of my favorite scifi. Especially good if you are into computer science.

This is the hardest hard scifi I've ever read. Very worth it.

'It's difficult to translate the motivation exactly, but they have a very precise aesthetic which dictates what they'll accept as a theory, and it's almost physically impossible for them to contradict it. If they try to dance a theory which fails to resonate with the neural system which assesses its simplicity, the dance falls apart.'

interesting back and forth about life in a machine...

This book has all the stuff I was thinking about in the early 1990s -- artificial life, genetic algorithms, cellular automata, philosophy of consciousness, virtual reality, neurochemistry, brain simulation -- all woven together into a premise that is absurd but with enough actual computer science (and inside jokes) to make it mind-blowingly plausible. Not a lot of action, but fun -- if you can follow the details.

Well it's going completely loopy now.

Well it's taken a turn for the loopy, and I actually can't follow it, despite getting the basic premise. Pretty sure it just isn't making sense.

Started slow on this one. I've been reading a chapter a month for the last 10. I have to say Egan is ingenious!

I wish these characters were more likable. I think that's a problem I have with many of Egan's books.

Totally finishing the book tonight. After some programming though.

Raja, by the time you get around to reading this, I will likely have forgotten how great chapter 3 is.
