Struggling with LOTR style narrative. Part Viking saga, part Grimms Fairy Tales, there is a remoteness in the narrator that leaves me feeling inconsequential. I probably won't finish this book. I think I prefer more a character driven slant on fantasy rather than the epic sweeping drama that uses its characters as foils to illustrate how a 'place' came to be.

I've often heard what a good book this was but never found the time to give it a try. At this point in the story, I'm realizing that was a bad mistake on my part, because this classic fantasy is getting better and better as it goes along.

The narrator is EPIC. I got severe chills when I heard him change his voice to fit the Troll and the witch. This book should have your full attention at all times. Just got to Valguard's realization of his birth. SHIT IS DOPE I LOVE THIS A LOT RIGHT NOW LIKE AHHHHH

This is all very Greek tragedy, and I don't mean only the accidental incest.

And this is why it is very important in sagas to know who your parents are!

Quite unlike most modern mainstream fantasy, which is nice.

Going to be reading this very very slowly on my phone. But already I can see that SAGA is the word I might be mentioning. And I mean saga in its old usage as in the Icelandic Sagas... or is it Greenland? Anyways, that is the form we've started out in - recognize the language and the structure.
