A very compelling novel that reads exactly like the old sagas.
Anderson successfully modelled his prose and mixed myths and Nordic legends into a convincing story of betrayal and destiny.

Well, *someone* threw themselves onto their sword. Guess it would've been bit of a bummer, had it been Skafloc (tho also: c'est la vie).
This was surprisingly enjoyable for such a traditional fantasy fare of distant legendary hero types battling it out. It's probably precisely *because* it had such an authentic olden mythology feel to it, that it captivated. The effortlessly lyrical language was enticing throughout.

Not far to get to the end, and I’m very much enjoying it, but I have to go to work for a bit (yes, on a Sunday), so it’ll have to wait.

The hell, audio!? That Odin voice! Way to scare the audience with the surprise voice boost, when the reading has been void of any enhancements all the way until now *hah* Geez...
(My chance to complement Bronson Pinchot for all the wonderful voices, however, from the booming strong ones to the beguiling lows). Carry on...

Valgard getting full on Shakespearean... not that he's been subtle so far, but seems to be going for the homestretch.

Oh, surprise, surprise... That was some family reunion. This is suddenly taking a rather familiar turn: will Skafloc's fate be modeled after that of Kullervo? Where as the lyricism has so far been the best of this it feels, I'm actually getting quite intrigued by the plot now.
Rather a pleasant rainy day listen too.

This is proving itself to be a satisfyingly brutal Norse epic, written with muscular, poetic fervor.

The text (2002) and audio (2011) are in fact quite unceasingly dissimilar. Not in message, but in sentence structures and word choices. How peculiar for an untranslated work. Like the whole work would've been re-edited between the editions.

I'd say a successful opening mood: I just got reminded of the Finnish national epic of Kalevala (through couple thought connections perhaps, but still...).
I have the ebook open while listening Audible audio (unabridged), and am noticing that the texts vary a bit.

‘But think,’ said Orm slyly, ‘if you do not wed me I will not be christened, and then, if we may trust the priests, my soul is lost. And you will have to answer heavily to your God for losing a human soul.’ He whispered to Athelstane, ‘Also, I will burn down this house and throw you off the sea-cliffs.’
‘Aye, daughter, we dare not lose a human soul,’ said Athelstane very quickly.
This is hilarious.

I'm liking this book a lot so far. Anderson's style of language is vivid and poetic, and the story itself borrows from the epic tradition of stories like Beowulf to create a tale that is ceaseless in action and intrigue. Quite the breath of fresh air compared to most fantasy fare within recent years.

XD
