Status Updates From The Collected Stories of Ph...

Enjoying this collection. The male characters in his stories often perspire - I wonder if that is something writers noticed more in the '50s or is it just something Dick was intrigued by.

Minority Report (the short story) was excellent, though vastly different from the Tom Cruise movie (aren't they always?)

finished on Friday night Oct 12.

Anyway, I've listened to 3 stories and they have amazing concepts and plot twists. I'm less impressed with the dialogue or narration.

“Oh, To Be A Blobel!“: An interesting premise about how one becomes like his enemy. I couldn't help but think of the robot analyst as 'Zoltar Speaks' from Big.

"What'll We Do With Ragland Park?": interestingly a continuation of "Stand-By" and one that's far more interesting as psi-powers, or the power of folk music, is brought to the fold.

"Stand-By": Underwhelming story but with some keen ideas (the government has been replaced by a machine, the top celebrity is a newscaster who wears a red clown wig).

"Orpheus with Clay Feet": fun time-travel story with a Twilight Zone feel penned under the name of the main character who in turn wrote under Dick's name in the story. "The Days of Perky Pat": Dick uses a post-apocalyptic world to show why Barbie is so successful.

"What the Dead Men Say": centers around a cool "half-life" concept that is seen again in his novel Ubik. The long short-story itself however seemed to drag on forever. Besides that most of the characters were unlikable and a couple seemed to blend into each other causing confusion (for me). Perhaps some warnings on how one person can control elections and much of the galaxy through sheer will and determination.

"Novelty Act": enjoyable story although with a fairly predictable twist. Later used in The Simulacra. "Waterspider": fun premise and one I'm a believer of. Helps if you've read a wide range of Sci-fi authors.

"If There Were No Benny Cemoli": an interesting story about deception, or what some today would call politics, in the post-apocalyptic future.

"Explorers We": short tale with a wonderful twist once again questioning the human in humanity. "War Game": the corporations may be smarter than we think. That is if that's what they want us to think. ++

"The Unreconstructed M": felt like a seed for a novel. A bit confusing but with some cool ideas. Fakery at it's finest.

"Recall Mechanism": perhaps a story about fate. Certainly an interesting premise and I love the ending.

"The Mold of Yancy": Found the story dry despite liking the premise of propaganda and its payoff. Dick wrote that he later used the concept for The Penultimate Truth.

"Captive Market": a metaphor for capitalism. Good stuff.

"Service Call": Dick answers two very important questions. What's a swibble? How do you end all war? The results are frightening.

"Autofac" Answers what my happen when automation goes unchecked. Does it evolve or is it pizzled?

"The Minority Report": paranoic, twisting tale that explores intent and freewill. Like!

Out like a light. Could this be another Walden adventure?
