When I first read this as a teenager I very much disliked the way that the plucky underdogs of the first section are depicted as the clumsy and oppressive empire in the next section; now I understand the subtlety of what Adams was doing from a literary and metaphysical standpoint. But it's still not comfortable reading to watch someone betraying himself and falling apart...
