Status Updates From Hunger for Reality

The fifth chapter has a lot of advise. The fourth chapter has raised some questions where it is written.. He (Moses) recklessly asserted himself on behalf of the Israelites instead of acting by God's direction. The result was a forty year exile in the Sinai wilderness..I am not able to understand this as to my understanding that is not the cause of the exile....I'll appreciate if someone can clarify me on this.
