At a time when world history teachers are being asked to ignore all history before 1450, this small book is being spotlighted in Japan, Germany and other countries for covering the agricultural revolution, migrations, world religions as historical foundation. Cynthia Brown is an American author to make us proud.

Only started this book and already found several historical misrepresentations. I'm rather surprised and annoyed to find this from a supposed history scholar.

very nice overviews of the big picture in historical times, and a nice antidote to overwhelming eurocentricism in my schoolboy days.

early agriculture stuff is getting more interesting, but it's a bit frustrating that the more handy claims (i.e. population sizes over time) don't have good citations.

Miles Stevenson
is finished
It was a great book that took you from our understanding of the beginnings of the universe all the way to our modern world, all condensed in 250 pages. I felt that this was a very important read for me, and am happy that it was my first here on Goodreads. I look forward to finishing many more.

Now that the world has made the transition from a hunting and gathering to an agricultural age (due to a warming of the earth after an Ice Age), much complexity has come about. With the ability to harvest crops, women are able to bear more children. This has lead to quite a large population increase. With this increase of population comes a need for social structure in society e.g. Bureaucracy, early religions, etc.

In three or so chapters, Brown has managed to cover our interpretation of the beginning of the universe -- Big Bang -- to the evolution of life on earth and finally leading to the rise of the human population and agriculture after the great Ice Age. Thus far its been a great read.

Wow, Wow, and Wow, additionally WOW. She, the author, is able to tell the 'history of everything' poignantly and succinctly!

From the Big Bang to the year 1000 CE in 168 pages - it wouldn't suit everyone, but I find the broad sweep fascinating. You see things at a high altitude that you'd miss closer to the ground.
