not at all what i expected/was lead to expect
the idea of writing about morality in tolkien’s writing without relating it to christianity at all is so weird to me and comes across forced and awkward in the essays
most of the essays also just seemed to be repeating what tolkien had said himself in a less interesting way
also not to be a horrible snob but the academic style was much too american for my taste lol

Lord help me this last chapter is one big long essay that's basically a rehash of the rest of the book. This guy knows LotR really well, but his writing style is just such a slog. It's like he's writing to people who are only familiar with the movies (Matthew Dickerson if you're reading this I don't mean it and please provide me with a free pdf of Ents Elves and Eriador asap)

A little slow to start but I am appreciating the development of the author's analysis of Tolkien's world.
