Status Updates From Virtually Dead

Starting to feel a bit jaded with this one now. Can't put my finger on why exactly...I'm just not connecting with any of the characters thus far, let alone giving a single, solitary, fuck about the main character. Ironically, it's almost as if the people out in the IRL meatspace are more like NPC's than anything conjured up inside a video game. I really enjoyed May's 'The Black House' though, so I'll stick with it.

It's funny reading about the software at the heart of this novel, because it all sounds so outmoded now. It was first published in 2010, yet it might as well have been 30yrs in the past.
I remember it like it was only yesterday...whilst conversely feeling as though it were an eternity ago.
Including tech can help ground a book in the time of its publication, but it also ends up rendering it inevitably dated.

Retrofuturism is very now apparently. Feels like a good book to be reading in #CurrentEra when a lot of people are wanting to start being more judicious with their tech use/reliance, and seeing the sinister iCreep in everything, realise that we ought to - if not be putting the brakes on things like AI and an app or subscription model for everything - be taking our foot off of the digital, electrical, accelerator.

Intriguing. Not hooked yet.
