Wiled uses sensory details to describe the room that Basil and Henry sit in, and we aren't quite given an idea of what is happening in the book, but simply where the scene is taking place. Because of this, we are left with a strong curiosity to figure out why the setting is so important, rather than the characters and actions.

I’m cross with Dorian for treating Basil this way.

It’s so interesting because this is what Wilde actually intended the novel to be and it completely changes the point of the story…the discussions about the “implied homosexuality” is actually quite literally just homosexuality, Wilde never censored it only his publisher did (and before he had the chance to approve what went to print!)

[Outside, there is the stirring of birds among the leaves or the sound of men going forth to their work or the sigh and sob of the wind coming down from the hills, & wandering round the silent house as though it feared to wake the sleepers. Veil after veil of thin dusky gauze is lifted, & by degrees the forms and colours of things are restored to them, and we watch the dawn remaking the world in its antique pattern.]

It really seems like this book that Dorian is reading is basically his story?

[It was a novel without a plot, and with only one character, being, indeed, simply a psychological study of a certain young Parisian, who spent his life trying to realise in the nineteenth century all the passions and modes of thought that belonged to every century except his own, and to sum up, as it were, in himself the various moods through which the world-spirit had…]

I do not think that Wilde intended to write this book as a reflection of himself, as the characters he wrote. But, I do believe that he intentionally added some of his beliefs into this book. Although this book is not a romance in any way, it has very heavy homoerotic undertones, which would be reasonable considering that a lot of books written in the 17th century followed this style of writing as well.
