This book is an exciting idea, but four chapters in and I'm feeling disappointed. Nelson seems to be conflating a lot of ideas—cruelty as catharsis in art, "torture porn," politically motivated artistic depictions of cruelty to name a few—and in smashing all these complicated ideas together, misses the nuance of the role of cruelty in art. But IDK, I'm less than halfway through, maybe it will make sense by the end.
