Ok Paul's insecurities are getting really boring

Brilliant book. Don't let the cover fool you. This is the best book I have read this year (I have read over 100). Re-reading for sheer pleasure.

“There are private schools.”
“Conservative, rich-people schools? Religious schools?” I’d never heard him sound bitter. “It’s too big a fight. I’m not a fighter. At all. I’m a cheerleader.”

Austin is one of the most adorable characters I've ever seen. It is absolutely impossible not to like him.

“He’s not your… student, is he?”
“No!” I didn’t mean to snap. “He’s not. He never was.”
“And you didn’t… hire him to come with you?”
“Really?” My mouth dropped open. “You think I’d bring an escort to my niece’s birthday party?”

Wow, that family sure is something else....

Oh. My. God. Paul's ex is here? NOW it's gonna get interesting!!

“You said it was a cookout.” His lips twisted. “Too hoochie?”
“Not at all,” I lied. Jesus Christ, he’s going to meet my entire family dressed like the Dukes of Hazard’s gay cousin. “You look great.”

A huge part of the charm of this story is the fact that Austin and Paul aren't the most natural match. It's like if King Charles was dating Dolly Parton. But they make it work.

“Remember when I was telling you about Jody Summers, and I said there was another author who came here too? Well, he writes romances set at the campground. Of course, he changes all the names and stuff, but we all know it’s about us. I’m definitely gonna buy the next one and see if he put me in it.”

Now who might that be (thinking hard). LOL.

“Why don’t you write about a handsome, nerdy professor who goes to a naked campground and meets a spunky younger man?”
“One that starts with a string of sex scenes and ends with them butchered in a tent by a serial killer?”
“Damn, Prof. You can be so fucking gloomy sometimes,” he teased. “It’s a love story. An MM romance. That stands for male-male.”

"Frank goes over to check and see if Toby needs anything, and Toby asks him if he can help him split firewood. Frank takes off his shirt, and he’s enormous, beefy, hairy, and he looks really hot chopping wood—like, it’s shot in slow motion and shit”—I didn’t bother to interrupt him with the crushing news that there is no slo-mo in books—“and of course they end up having sex in front of the fire.”
“Of course.”

Holy S#@t, Paul's first published novel sounds like something I would totally read!!

“Can I tell y’all something funny?” Austin looked back and forth between Honey and Mom. “Now keep in mind, I only moved here about a year and a half ago, but for the longest time, when I saw your event posters and your ads on social media and stuff, I thought you were a drag queen."

This is the funniest story ever!! Austin such a cute dork. I absolutely love him <3

He was already staring up at the menu board, so he didn’t see the once-over she gave us. I wondered how we must look together—Austin with his ripped clothes, guns blazing; me in khaki cargo shorts and a V-neck T-shirt, trying to suck in my stomach.
