Status Updates From I Am Legend

She slips him some pills to take before the execution so it will be over quickly. Looking out over the faces and seeing everyone is scared of him he realises that although he was scared of them, they now outnumber him and he has become their minority bogey man who kills for no reason and needs to be stopped. He is the legend.

The vampires have evolved. They can survive and do sunlight for a bit. They are going to start a new society. She urges him to run. He stays. Eventually the vampires infiltrate his place, they take him back to their new society but he is shot in the process. Ruth comes to see him asking why he didn’t run and saying he wouldn’t have been shot if he didn’t fight them but he is to be executed anyways.

So he finds Ruth in a field in the sunlight being in the sun he’s like oh she’s safe. He takes her home but said he’s going to check her blood. He asks her questions about how she’s survived that don’t seem to track and she wants to know what he knows about the virus, he doesn’t want to tell her too much. In the morning he checks her blood and she attacks him and runs leaving a note explaining herself.

Didnt realize there was a theme regarding sexual urges and loneliness in this book???? Lmao okay

The weeks of feeding it worrying about it being outside…. Then he caught it and I was like yay, thinking they would have the dog/owner relationship from the movie - but no, the chapter finishes saying the dog died a week later. 🫠🫠

He finds a dog wandering the street and spends weeks gaining its trust with food and water, so he can bring it in before it’s caught by the vampires. After not coming around for a few days it comes back and it’s sick, he finally manages to catch it and brings it home, it spends the night panicking trying to hide before nightfall. Not understanding it’s safe. He calms it. I was so invested in the dog story.

It flashes back here and there to the before when his wife Virginia and daughter Cathy were alive. When Cathy died they gave her body to be burned (the only way to stop the turn) but when Virginia died he couldn’t bring himself to have her burnt so snuck to a graveyard and buried her. She turned back up at the house scratching at the door when she turned.

It’s been 10 months since the infection turned everyone in to vampires and Robert lives alone in his house. Everynight the vampires taunt him to come out. His old colleague and neighbour Ben calls to him by name.
He begins to research what could have made them like this testing with garlic oil which they hate but injected does nothing? Why does the sunlight affect them?
