Gloria Anzaldúa mention hell yeah. Also I've accepted the fact that I'm going to have to keep my dictionary tab permanently open for this book

"[Language] sometimes only sees itself; if it sees outside of itself, it sometimes responds only with itself; and it sometimes must be left altogether, perishing in the nonlanguage the moment demands."
Linguistics is so fun

Chen is like I am going to reference every single heavy hitting piece of communist, feminist, anti-racist literature and I am perfectly ok with that

It feels like Chen goes out of their way to use the most complicated terminology for objectively simple things. Why do you have to say "ontological veridicality" my computer doesn't even recognize veridicality as a word
(also I'm complaining but I'm 90% sure this book is aimed at academics not random people like me so...)

Trying to search for definitions of some of these words and even the Wikipedia definition says "This article may be too technical for most readers to understand"

my god that intro was like a map with so much incessant labeling that the actual geography is indecipherable

Writing that says "this is related to this, this, that, and also this" feels like a lazy excuse to not be specific with the actual point.
like oh my god I know animacy as a concept has political, social, linguistic etc ramifications BECAUSE YOU'VE SAID IT FIVE TIMES WITHOUT EXPANDING!!!!!! (except this is the intro so. I'm being mean)

Another good chapter! It was more difficult to follow than the previous one, but I enjoyed it :)
I didn't think that I was much of a fan of theoretical analysis of media within my theory, but I'm very much enjoying it! I feel less able to critically consider those aspects because of my lack of critical experience therein, but I am enjoying nonetheless :]

I am happy to report that chapter three was leagues more enjoyable for me than chapter two!!! I am again very excited for this book in contrast to my previous trepidation. I would even say that this chapter can serve well as a very interesting and thought-provoking stand-alone (though I am of course biased by my academic interest in historical categorization of race and animality).

This chapter was really disappointing for me, but I am hoping the rest of the book is less so

I have missed theory reading So bad omg. I have however just now remembered that there reaches a point where all of the words just start to bounce :(
p.s. I realized today the funny little coincidence of me reading this just after Frankenstein and I am very amused :3
