And also the Amish stories...maybe a bit idealistic, but they had a lot about the inner world of real people who have doubts and worriss and are not perfect, but not stereotypically sinners.

I would think in real life living a life where you ride the range and have hours to yourself in a stunning landscape would lead you to pondering the mysteries or life, unless you drown it out with drinking. These characters make sense to me. the doctor is similar

I've never read other cowboy/western novels. Beyond true grit (a long time ago, need to read it again) ...and CJ Wall which is a bit removed from the traditional western.

I have to wonder if they're all as introspective as this. How much does this book -loving, thoughtful, emotional man and the other filled out characters resemble zane grey or the lonesome dove guy can't remember him now. McMurtry?

Dang it I'm hooked on this story. Another rattlesnake plot...this one a little more believable but thats not quite how snake handling works.

I like Sam as a marshall and detective, and I like the doctor. Excited for the rest
