Sheba seems innocent herself, at the very least devoid of ego; and that seems to be a curiosity for Barbara, who is, given the nature of her writing and her insistence on scrutinizing every aspect of Sheba’s life with a fine-toothed comb, very egotistical.

For a story supposedly about Sheba’s scandalous affair with a student, Barbara, the narrator, pays a great deal of detail to her and Sheba’s own meeting and her mixed feelings for Sheba at the outset; there’s almost a level of voyeurism settling into Barbara’s story - she has a serious interest in Sheba’s moves and relationships; a level of jealousy, as well, that plays out in snide and childish comments.

Simply excellent character portraits of two women. The plot is nearly irrelevant. Feels like it is merely a vehicle to bring out the characters' personalities better.
