I had no idea what a big impact Charles Dickens' work had on Tolstoy. Charles Dickens probably never knew—an interesting thought when one considers the larger ramifications.

An excellent view of history, culture, and family. A fascinating read.

Not an easy read, Russian history can make me shudder. Discovering how Tolstoy managed to craft his searingly honest work in such a tumultuous environment is like learning how a saint survived trial by fire. I am reading slowly but with great interest.
