the entire section telling the entire epos of the Wei Zhi years as they appear in the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki is fucking incredible and truly makes me appreciate how even the middling myths are trifunctional in character. Love the conclusion of "yeah these aren't accurate histories, obviously, but looking at the Wei Zhi text you find that they are an accurate representation of the mentality of the times."

"I would characterize Himiko as a charismatic shaman, possibly involved in necromancy, but at least in league with the spirits of the dead, believed to restrain their actions and to be able to release them at will,hence controlling social havoc by the narrowest margin. For those within her sphere of authority she was indispensable to the maintenance of peace and order.
