I've been getting back into watching films again lately, thanks to grabbing BFI Player and Mubi subscriptions in sales, and Prime Video having more classics on offer. And to think I was a film critic for a decade...

This book is fantastic and really interesting. I’m finding it easy to grip with and I’m enjoying learning about not just the history of film itself but about the events in history surrounding it and how they affected each other and coexisted. I’m at a very early era right now which is fascinating.

“He would begin making films which used the straight storytelling techniques of closed romantic realism, rejecting anything too subjective, autobiographical, experimental or philosophical.”

As great as Jaws, Star Wars, and The Exorcist are, it makes my heart sink to think about how they killed my favorite era of film, that being New Hollywood (late 60s-early 70s). To quote William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist: "I had this epiphany that what we were doing wasn't making fucking films to hang in the Louvre”. 🥲 I suppose all good things must come to an end

Super interesting and educational, but it’s a depressing series of stories that go like “This film changed the face of cinema forever with its revolutionary camera techniques and nonconformist political ideals. Critics and audiences alike despised it.” It makes me wonder what films today will go on to inspire future generations of filmmakers the most 🤔

I don't think I've ever actually been enjoyed a nonfiction book and found it genuinely interesting and engaging at the same time before.
