“My younger self had always been able to find role models in the culture around me when my real life failed to provide them.”
Hm an interesting thought

I like that each chapter ends with a message to the reader, directly reaffirming the reader’s personhood and individuality and needs. Kudos

And this one of many reasons why representation matters.

“[Pop culture] were the things we talked about …whenever we walked into new situations where we were visibly different. Maybe we were missing privilege and whiteness, but we could watch what everyone else was watching and try to close the distance between us and them.”

"The Rihanna Fantasy" - a good chapter; I like the framing of the personal vs pop culture in this...

Love the framing of this memoir, one that I get all too well being of similar age to the author. [I think it would be weird if someone other than the author narrated their memoir audiobook, but Lee's narration skills are not great... I would be the same way, and I'm enjoying the story if not the narration :/]

As an Asian immigrant woman, this book is very relatable and timely read that I think many people will also be able to connect with.
